BENEFITS OF INSTALLING EV CHARGERS

Electric Vehicle Chargers come with several benefits that make them an ideal option for any business or homeowner.

REDUCED CARBON FOOTPRINT

Electric vehicles create significantly less pollution and carbon emissions than traditional gasoline-powered cars, so the use of EV chargers is a more sustainable and responsible choice when it comes to transportation.

COST SAVINGS

Using an EV charger can save you money in the long run because electrical costs are typically lower than gasoline expenses. Additionally, BC offers incentives for installing EV charging stations through their EV Charger Rebate Program.

INCREASED CONVENIENCE

EV chargers provide a convenient way to keep your vehicles powered up and ready for use at any time. This is especially helpful if you need to drive long distances, as you can just plug in your car while it’s parked and have it fully charged when you’re ready to go.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

This is the question we are asked most often. The simplest installation is where we install your charger beside an electrical panel in a home or unit that has the capacity and breaker to legally accept that additional load. We can do this for as little as $599 plus permit and GST.

Realistically there are a number of considerations that go into providing the best solution for you at a cost effective price. Those factors can include your panel size and type, cost and availability of the circuit breaker, the type of EV charger you want to install, the distance from panel to charger location, does a load sharing option need to be installed, to name some.

Please remember that an EV charger is electrical equipment that’s installation is governed by the Canadian Electrical Code. There are many factors for us to consider so you have a safe and effective installation.

Yes. In BC you need an electrical permit issued for you location.

The Canadian Electrical Code is explicit on the requirements for installation. This is for your safety and to ensure that your device works in manner it which it is intended, within the framework of your home or business electrical system. This also allows you the comfort in knowing that the install meets all applicable regulations and is fully insurable.

At ELECTRIC1 we know doing the right things in the right manner leads to success. Beware those that don’t.

Yes, currently the British Columbia Government is offering a 50% rebate (up to $350 of the installation cost) for a Level 2 (240 volt) charging station for private homes.

There are also three types of EV charger rebates available to condominiums and apartment buildings, where strata owners can claim between $3,000 and $120,000, depending on which plan they opt for.

Workplaces qualify for various rebates too and can receive up to 5 hours of free advice and planning assistance from an EV charging advisor.

It’s important to note that you have to be pre-approved for a rebate before you buy or install a charger in a multi-unit residence or workplace.

At ELECTRIC1, we can help you navigate these incentives and make the most of available rebates.

EV chargers are categorized into three levels based on their charging speed and voltage requirements.

Level 1 chargers use a standard 120-volt outlet and provide a charge rate of 8 km per hour, taking up to 12 to 20 hours to fully charge a battery EV (6 to 12 hours for a plug-in hybrid). They are mainly used in private homes.

Level 2 chargers use a 240-volt outlet (similar to common household appliances) and offer a faster charge rate of 30 km per hour, taking 6 to 14 hours to fully charge a battery EV (4 to 8 hours for a plug-in hybrid). They are suitable for homes, businesses, and common areas.

Fast chargers (Level 3) use a direct current connection and can charge up to 100 km in 30 minutes or provide 80% charge at 50 kW (depending on vehicle type). They take 1 to 4 hours to fully charge a battery EV (15 minutes to 3 hours for a plug-in hybrid) and are mainly used in businesses and common areas.

Yes, many EV chargers now come with remote monitoring, management, and security features. These features can typically be accessed via a mobile app or web portal, allowing you to view real-time charging data, monitor your energy usage and costs, schedule charging times, and remotely start or stop charging sessions. Some chargers also offer features such as automatic software updates, customizable access and authorization settings, and security alerts to help ensure that your charger and your vehicle are safe and secure. Additionally, some chargers may require a subscription or additional fees to access certain remote features or services, so it’s always a good idea to check with the manufacturer or your charging provider to understand the full range of capabilities and associated costs.

EV charging stations need to adhere to local legislation codes and standards. This includes BC Building Codes, Canadian and National Electrical Codes, as well as Occupational Health and Safety regulations to name a few.

It’s important to partner with a professional familiar with best practices to ensure your installation is compliant with local requirements.

The maximum charging speed offered by EV chargers varies depending on the type of charger and the vehicle being charged.

Generally, Level 1 chargers offer the slowest charging speed at around 4-5 miles of range per hour (roughly 8 km per hour), while Level 2 chargers offer a faster charging speed of around 10-60 miles of range per hour (roughly 16-97 km per hour), depending on the charger and the vehicle. Fast chargers (Level 3) provide the fastest charging speed, with up to 80% charge in as little as 30 minutes, or around 100 km of range, depending on the charger and the vehicle.

It’s important to note, however, that not all electric vehicles can accept the maximum charging speed offered by every type of charger, and charging times can also be impacted by factors such as the battery size, temperature, and age. It’s always best to refer to the owner’s manual or consult with a charging professional to determine the optimal charging speed for your specific vehicle.

EV chargers typically come with warranties that cover defects in materials and workmanship up to a certain period. The length of the warranty can vary depending on the manufacturer and the model of the charger. Some manufacturers offer warranties ranging from one year to up to 10 years or more.

Warranties may cover parts, labor, and shipping costs, and may also include guarantees for the charging speed, network connectivity, and software updates. It’s important to read the terms and conditions carefully before purchasing an EV charger to ensure that you understand what is covered and what isn’t.

Yes! EV chargers require regular cleaning, cable and connector inspection, software updates, electrical safety checks, and replacement of worn-out parts. By following these maintenance requirements, you can help ensure that your EV charger operates safely and efficiently for years to come.
